Pausing Subscriptions

Pause and resume active subscriptions, including scheduled resume dates

Subscription Pause

Subscriptions with a status of Active or Retrying can be paused. Pausing a subscription stops recurring billing only. All other subscription functionality continues to operate as normal.

When a subscription is paused, its status changes to Paused and any retry data (retry date and retry count) is cleared.

Pause Types

When pausing a subscription, choose one of two pause types:

TypeBehavior
IndefiniteSubscription remains paused until manually resumed. When you resume it, you choose the next renewal date. If not resumed within 6 months, the subscription is automatically canceled.
Pause UntilSubscription automatically resumes on the selected date. The date must be within 6 months of the pause start date.

Pause Until

Use Pause Until when you already know the day the subscription should come back. The date you choose becomes the resume date, and the subscription automatically returns to Active on that date.

Pause Indefinitely

Use Indefinitely when you want to stop billing without picking a resume date yet. The subscription stays paused until someone clicks Resume. If it is not resumed within 6 months, it is automatically canceled.

Resuming a Subscription

Resuming works differently depending on how the subscription was paused:

  • If the subscription was paused with a resume date, it will automatically resume on that date.
  • If the subscription was paused indefinitely, click Resume and choose the future Next Renewal Date that should reactivate the subscription.

How to Pause a Subscription

Subscriptions can be paused from two places:

  • Dashboard — From the Subscription Detail view, select Pause from the available actions.
  • Customer Accounts — Customers can pause their own subscriptions from their storefront Customer Accounts.
